A heat pump is a house heating and cooling appliance that moves heat from one location to another. Thermal energy is merely another name for heat. Thermal energy can be created from a variety of energies. Most frequently, thermal energy is produced in our homes by converting electrical energy (electricity) or chemical energy (oil furnace). A heat pump simply transfers thermal energy that is already existing from one location to another.
THE BASIC CONCEPT:
The most straightforward illustration of this concept is what happens when you open a window in winter. Heat naturally travels to cooler places. The space swiftly cools down as the warm air travels outdoors to where it is colder. Heat pumps reverse this process by transporting warm air from a cold region, such as the outside, to a warm area, such as your home.
HOW IT WORKS:
A heat pump operates by forcing refrigerant through two coils. One coil is located indoors, the other outside. The indoor coil serves as a condenser, and the outside coil serves as an evaporator of refrigerant (a substance used in several systems intended to alter the temperature of an area) when it’s cold outside, and you want to heat your home. The refrigerant absorbs thermal energy from the ambient air as it transforms into gas in the outdoor evaporator coil before moving to the cooler inside. The thermal energy (heat) is released into the inside air as the coil compresses the refrigerant vapor into a liquid.
