What should I consider when selecting a new furnace and/or air conditioning unit?
When selecting a new furnace and/or air conditioning unit there are a lot of factors to consider. The first thing we should discuss is the complete system design. Most people think that the furnace, or AC unit, they select will determine the benefits or quality of their heating or cooling system. This is not accurate. A home heating or cooling system is really a complex pairing of several different “systems” so if you are looking for high quality and efficiency, you need to look at all the factors at the same time. Here is a list of a few things to look at when considering a new furnace or air conditioner:
Fuel Type
What is your existing fuel type? Is it propane, natural gas, or oil? Do you want to switch your fuel type and why? There are advantages and disadvantages to each, but the type of fuel helps narrow down the options.
Distribution
How is the warm or cool air distributed throughout the house? This may be one of the most important things to consider. The ducting, or air distribution system, can have a huge impact on the performance and efficiencies of your equipment. Remember, when the manufacturers put a rating on a system, they are getting those ratings from a “perfect laboratory installation”… the chances of your installation being like the one in the factory is pretty slim. Custom Climates looks at the complete system including ducting to make sure you know exactly what you’ll get.
Zones
How many zones do you have? How are those zones controlled? Is this adequate or recommended by the manufacturer? Zoning needs to be done properly, and having a barometric bypass damper back into the return is not recommended. Dump zones are very inefficient. Custom Climates knows the best practices for zoning. Let us help you have more control, with it affecting the efficiency of your equipment.
Why does Custom Climates carry the Trane line of products?
Over the years Custom Climates has installed many different furnace and AC options and still continues to offer several different options. However, Trane is always the first recommendation. Custom Climates is proud to be a Trane Authorized Dealer. We have very successful installations from houses to hotels, and highly recommend the Trane products for your project. Trane offers a very high-quality product with a great reputation that has spanned decades.
Many other brands we have serviced and occasionally installed have the “they’ve come a long way” reputation. In other words, they used to have a reputation for being a low-quality product, or they used to have poor customer service and now they are “pretty good”. We prefer to stick with a brand that has always had great customer service and support, as well as great quality products. Some of the oldest systems we have replaced have been Trane systems.

What Trane product is right for me?
The selection of the right Trane product is going to have to be based on some of the factors already discussed. The size of the furnace, which is represented by the amount of BTU’s, is based on the requirements for the home. This is calculated by a Manual J (load calculation). Custom Climates will also consider how the delivery of the BTU’s to the space is designed. In some cases, the amount of ductwork, the design of the ductwork, and how many BTU’s that ductwork can supply to the space can surpass the output of the equipment or fall short.
The other items to consider when selecting a Trane product will be the add on items that may benefit your goals and investment. Additional indoor air quality products can also be a major factor in system design and selection. Custom Climates expertly designs and walks you through the process.
